Abhyanga is an Ayurvedic detoxifying massage in which medicated oil is applied over the body with certain amount of pressure in specific directions. It can be applied to the whole body or on one part of the body. Many of the prevalent modern massage techniques are the modified forms of Abhyanga. Practicing Abhyanga restores the balance of the Doshas (vital energies of body) and enhances well-being and longevity.
What we need for Abhyanga is medicated oil 100-150 ml and Masseurs. To perform Abhyanga first medicated oil is selected according to climate, prakriti and disease condition of the individual then oil is heated up to 38oC – 44oC. For head massage lukewarm oil preferred. It should be done for 60 minutes.
When procedure is completed one should take rest for 5 minutes then Proper swedana(medicated steam ) is very beneficial before bath that enhances the benefit of Abhyanga that induces sweating and detoxifies the body and mind, Then lukewarm water bath with suitable medicated soap or snana choorna( herbal powder for bath) is advised. Rasnadi choorna should be applied on head after bath, food which is light to digest is advised .Khichadi is a good option can be chosen in food after Abhyanga.
