Urticaria Through Ayurvedic Understanding

Urticaria is a kind of individual swelling appears rapidly over any part of the body or whole body and resolves spontaneously within a few hours. Common reaction pattern characterized by the presence of itchy or burning oedematous swelling. Urticaria Is a skin lesion which is similar to Sheetapitta and Udrada mentioned in Ayurvedic classics. Urticaria may be associated with diffuse swelling of lips, face and throat. Rarely wheezing, abdominal pain, headache and even anaphylactic shock noticed. These symptoms appear due to mastcell  degranulations with release of histamine.

  • Inhalants
  • Injection
  • Drugs
  • Latex
  • Contact with animal saliva

Ayurvedic Perspective:

Lesion with more swelling and itching are generally Kapha dominants  are udarada,vata dominant lesions are called sheetapitta. This condition arises due to aasathmayata in RASA DHATU and Twak(skin) due to different agantu hetus(external factors).

Rasa dhatu is vitiated with AMA and AMA release Vishas in Rasa dhatu which appear as  Urticaria.

Diseases Profile: 

  • Dosha -Vata  and kapha 
  • Dooshya –rasa and rakta
  • Status of agni- generally ama is present in rasa dhatu
  • Type of srotodusti –rasavaha srotas
  • Rogamarga –sakha and abhyantra rogamarga 

 Ayurvedic Treatment Principle: 

  • Amapachana drugs should be given to detoxify the visha.
  • Vaman and virechan should be done according to the strength of patient and strength of diseases.
  • In second stage vatahara drugs with specific Rasayan properties are given to empower the immune status.

Herb of choice : Patola,Nimba,Trivrita,Pippali,Triphala

  • Urticaria management is closely associated with empowering agni and correcting altered vyadhikshamatva(immunity).
  • Normalising kapha dosha and related rasa dhatu are the main targets in urticaria management.
  • Rasa axis should be made normal with positive twak sara.

Internal ayurvedic decoction which can be selected: 

  • Rajanaydi choorna
  • Haridra khandam
  • Nimbadi kasayam
  • Amrutharajniyadi kasayam
  • Patolmooladi kashayam
  • Root of  agnimantha with ghee
  • Amalaki with jaggary

Urticaria is a vascular reaction of the skin.They can be mild or severe,if it last more than six weeks may be a chronic condition.That need a right treatment,so it includes identification of the cause, managing imbalance and improving disturbed immunity.
