Black pepper is very strong, dry and hot in quality. These qualities of black pepper help in subduing the kapha dosha in the body but it also increases the pitta dosha, if taken in excess. It is a digestive and capable of reaching the minutest channel in the body to remove the accumulated toxins, hence it also help in subduing vata dosha.
Medicinal Uses
- In all the respiratory disorders, asthma, and all the types of cough, powder of black pepper can be taken in the dose of 500 mg., along with honey, Jaggery and ghrita.
- Black pepper powder is very useful in the form of gargling along with salt and warm water in the upper respiratory tract infections such as uvulitis, recurrent sore throat, pharyngitis, and mouth diseases such as mouth ulcers, halitosis (bad breath), dental caries, and hoarse voice.
- Black pepper powder should be used in regular diet especially by non-vegetarians, to help in digesting the heavy meat recipes. It is also beneficial in the digestive problems such as gaseous distension, and indigestion.
- Black pepper is also used in the weakness and loosening of the anal sphincter especially in cases of piles.
- Black pepper powder is effective in chronic headache and migraine in the form of nasal drops prepared in milk. Same preparation can be used as local application on the fore head in the fore head in the form of paste.
- In chronic dysentery, black pepper powder should be taken in the dose of 500 mg., thrice a day along with ghrita or oil.
- It works as an antidote in the indigestion caused due to excessive intake of pure fats as butter or ghrita.
CAUTION: black pepper is very potent medicine, which vitiates pitta dosha, increases the dryness and destroys kapha dosha and excess fats of the body. Therefore it should not be given to infants and weak children. It should not be used in summer. It must not be taken by person suffering from hyperacidity and/or gastric ulcer.
